Things I Will NOT Do as a Wedding Florist

Photography by Alyssa Lizarraga Photography

As a wedding florist, my commitment goes beyond simply arranging flowers. I strive to create stunning, sustainable designs that honor both your vision and the environment. This means there are certain practices I choose to avoid in order to uphold my values and deliver the best possible service. Here’s a look at what I will not do as your wedding florist—and why.

1. Use Floral Foam

Floral foam is essentially blocks of microplastics coated in toxic chemicals. It’s harmful to both my health and the environment. Thankfully, there are sustainable mechanics for all designs that don’t require foam. From chicken wire and pin frogs to various reusable water sources, there are eco-friendly alternatives that create stunning designs while producing far less waste.

*If you’re a florist interested in learning more about foam-free mechanics, feel free to reach out for a Mentoring Session. Let’s work together to make the industry greener!

2. Use Spray-Painted or Bleached Flowers

Nature already provides us with such incredible beauty that altering flowers with spray paint or bleach feels unnecessary. These chemically treated flowers cannot be composted, smell unpleasant, and are harmful to the environment.

If you love the look of colored baby’s breath, consider natural alternatives like yarrow, rice flower, or sedum—as seen here. For something that lasts forever, naturally dried flowers are a wonderful option. Let’s embrace the natural beauty of blooms instead of compromising sustainability.

3. Negotiate My Labor Costs

A common question I get is why labor costs for wedding flowers are high. The reality is that producing wedding florals involves strenuous labor. About 70% of my job is carrying heavy materials and flowers, often under tight deadlines. Working with live products means we can’t spread the workload over months or weeks—everything must come together within a matter of days.

If you receive a quote with unusually low labor costs, it’s often a red flag. This could mean subpar service or that the florist isn’t valuing their own time, which might indicate inexperience. My rates reflect my time, effort, and commitment to delivering the best results for your big day.

4. Charge More Simply Because It’s a Wedding

There’s a persistent myth that flowers cost more “just because it’s a wedding.” The truth is, wedding florals involve far more than just providing flowers. You’re paying for a full-service experience, which includes:

  • Months of communication to ensure your vision comes to life.

  • Curating, sourcing, and designing with the freshest and most beautiful blooms.

  • Time and expertise to keep your flowers alive and vibrant for your big day.

  • A skilled team to execute designs efficiently and flawlessly.

  • Packing, transporting, delivering, setting up, flipping, and striking your arrangements.

  • Access to custom inventory and unique artistry tailored to your vision. All of which needs to be cleaned and prepped before and after your event.

Wedding florals are custom works of art, created within a short and intense time frame. When you invest in wedding flowers, you’re investing in a professional service, not just the blooms themselves. It’s about creating a seamless and magical experience for your special day—and that is worth every penny.

While these are four big things I won’t do as a wedding florist, I’m proud to offer a wide range of Services that prioritize sustainability, creativity, and your unique vision. I’m passionate about providing high-quality wedding florals that reflect your style and values.
