Insights from a San Diego Wedding Florist

As it is World Environment Day I wanted to share some insight into how you can make your Wedding Florals more Sustainable.

In recent years, more couples have started prioritizing sustainability in their wedding planning, from minimizing waste to supporting local vendors. As a San Diego wedding florist committed to responsible design, we believe florals can be beautiful and better for the planet.

Here are five impactful ways to create stunning floral arrangements with sustainability in mind.

1. Go Foam-Free

Traditional floral foam is a single-use plastic that doesn't break down and can release microplastics into water systems. For us, going foam-free isn’t just a design choice; it’s a responsibility.

Sustainable alternatives include chicken wire, moss, floral frogs, and reusable water tubes. These mechanics reduce waste and support more natural, airy designs—something we love as a sustainable florist.

2. Source Locally and Seasonally

The majority of flowers used in the U.S. are imported and heavily treated with chemicals to withstand transit. This comes with a significant carbon footprint.

Working with seasonal blooms from California flower farms supports our local economy and results in fresher, more fragrant arrangements. Here in San Diego, we’re lucky to have year-round access to incredible regional growers.

3. Rent or Reuse Vessels and Installations

Rather than buying new mechanics, vessels, or hard goods for every event, we maintain a full inventory of rental items available to all of our clients. This includes vases, candle holders, structures, and design tools.

By reusing materials across events, we reduce waste and avoid the constant consumption and shipping of new goods.

4. Minimize Floral Waste

Floral waste is one of the most overlooked environmental impacts of weddings. After the event, most flowers end up in the trash and head straight to a landfill.

As a sustainable florist, we compost all eligible organic materials from our events and studio. Composting turns floral waste into nutrient-rich soil instead of methane-producing landfill waste. It's one of the most effective ways to give flowers a second life and close the loop on the floral cycle.

By avoiding foam and reusing our mechancids we also keep those micro plastics out of the landfills.

We also encourage clients to consider donation programs or flower giveaways for any arrangements they’d like to extend beyond the wedding day.

5. Avoid Harmful Chemicals and Sprays

Spray paints, bleach, and chemical preservatives, especially for dried florals, may offer a bold look, but they’re often toxic for both people and the planet.

We choose to work with naturally dried flowers and steer clear of synthetic sprays or dyes. Embracing the natural beauty of each stem supports eco-friendly practices and results in more timeless, organic designs.
